The primary goals in the design of engine compressors are maximum efficiency and operating range while keeping design space, weight and component count at minimum.
This paper describes the aerodynamic design and optimization of an OGV with a reduced blade count by one third for a specified flight envelope. Both 2D and 3D design and optimization techniques were used. Finally the tonal sound emission was compared with the baseline design.
With a significant reduced blade count the aerodynamic losses and exit flow angles were successfully reduced in all operating points for the given flight envelope.
